Doughnuts are like fried cakes. The discussion of doughnut history begins with the mid-19th century with the first recorded doughnut recipes. During that period doughnuts were known as olykoeks, or oily cakes, and it's primarily the Dutch who are credited the discovery of doughnut by taking sweet dough balls and frying them in pork fat.
Popularity
Around in the 1920s, doughnuts were being mass-produced in USA to cater to the overwhelming demands from the market. Doughnuts were treated as breakfast, snacks and other times of the day foods. It is also to treated as a comfort food.
The first doughnut machine was invented by a Russian expatriate named Adolph Levitt. By 1934, Levitt was earning 25,000,000 annually for the sales of his doughnut machines to bakeries.
In the 1940's and 50's, marks the beginning of doughnut chains such as Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Dunkin' Doughnuts. As coffee became more of a staple in bakeries across the country, the perception of the doughnut as a breakfast item became more prevalent. There seemed to be no stopping the oily cake.
